Nintendo Sweats - An Easy Upcycle

My husband had this Nintendo zip hoodie that he discarded into the giveaway pile.  Why?  Not because he doesn't like hoodies, but because he doesn't like zip hoodies.  Picky, much?

Sadly, I don't have a before picture of the sweatshirt.  Instead of giving a perfectly good hoodie away I decided to upcycle it and make it into a a hoodie for Little Man.  I failed miserably.  I couldn't figure out how to shorten it without cutting the graphic or ripping out the zipper completely.   What I ended up with was a complete mess (sorry forgot to get a picture).  I threw this mess into the scrap box where it sat for two years.  I recently rediscovered it and realized I couldn't let the fun graphics go to waste.

I took the graphic from the back of the shirt and sewed it to a pair of sweats for Little Man.  I stitched the graphic onto the pattern piece before sewing the pants together.  I used the Kicking Back Sweats pattern from Sewing for Boys.

I sewed the Nintendo logo from the front of the shirt onto a pair of sweats for Mini Man.  I used the Mr. Two Face pattern from Sewing for Boys.

I think it was a relatively easy fix and kind of fun upcycle.  I like the look of Mini Man's pants better than Little Mans.  I think Little Man's might look better if I'd used navy blue fleece instead of gray.  They are also laughably long on him.  I'm not sure what I did by they are a good 2-3" long.  The kid is so skinny, though, the pants will probably fit perfectly next year.

  1. I can't imagine very many garments more difficult to upcycle from adult to a kid size than a zip up hoodie (a blazer maybe?) Kudos for trying it! The pants are really cute- thy make me nostalgic!
